What was the purpose of Heisenberg’s visit to Bohr in 1941 in Copenhagen? And what did they say to each other? The English playwright Michael Frayn (1933) explores the question with a clever mix of history, politics, ethics, science and poignant humanity in a drama that is more dramatically current than ever, winner of a Molière (1999) and a Tony Award (2000).

The Danish physicist Niels Bohr, Nobel Prize winner in 1922, met the brilliant young German student Werner Heisenberg when he was only 20 years old. Two years later Heisenberg joined Bohr in Copenhagen in 1924 to become his assistant, but also quickly a family member for Niels, his wife Margrethe and their children. In the years that followed their collaboration and friendship would produce extraordinary results: the uncertainty principle, the complementarity and the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.

With Nazism and then the war their paths separated. One day in September 1941 Werner Heisenberg, now a Nazi scientist and also a Nobel Prize winner, visits his old professor in German-occupied Copenhagen. Niels and Margrethe Bohr receive him with uneasiness. The two physicists go out for a walk to discuss away from possible Gestapo microphones. But the walk and the conversation don’t last long. The two quickly return home. Bohr is furious and hastily and coldly dismisses his old student.

What did they say to each other?

In the years that followed and to this day, the content of that brief conversation that could have determined the course of history remains mysterious and ambiguous.

Undetermined.

After “The Physicists” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt in 2022, Sipario returns to the stage with another show on theatre, science and society.

Sipario, Italian theater group in the Netherlands, is part of the ESTEC Theater Group, based in the European Space Agency (ESA) plant in Noordwijk, and has been active in the Netherlands for almost thirty years with theatrical performances in Italian.
